Publication Workshop

ATTENTION FINAL STAGE and RECENT DOCTORAL GRADUATES

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS TO NEW SCHOLAR PUBLICATION MENTORING WORKSHOP

CIES 2014, Toronto, March 10-15, 2014

Purpose of Workshop

The New Scholars Committee is organizing a publication workshop in order to provide mentoring on the process of producing a publishable paper. This workshop is a unique opportunity for final stage and recent Ph.D. and Ed.D. graduates to discuss a paper that they have developed – or would like to refine – for publication with experienced scholars and peers. It will provide each fellow the opportunity to receive feedback, particularly on the paper sections related to theoretical framework, methodology, and findings. The workshop will also contribute to strengthening links among peers in other international education programs.

Time/Format of Workshop

The New Scholars Publication Mentoring Workshop is one afternoon session that participants attend on Tuesday March 11, Wednesday March 12, and Thursday March 13, 2014. The workshop lasts approximately 3 hours and consists of informal and brief presentations of the publication drafts, each followed by constructive feedback from faculty and peers.

Travel Grant

Out of those invited to participate in the New Scholars Publication Mentoring Workshop, some participants will be selected to receive travel grants unless they have secured other funding to attend the 2014 CIES Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada. If you have other travel support, please state this on your application so that resources can be allocated to students who are not so fortunate. There are three types of travel grants: Merit Travel Grants, Majority World Context Travel Grants and CIES Newcomer/Institutional Support Travel Grants. Upon acceptance to the workshop, participants will be given additional information about the travel grants.

Qualifications for Applicants

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. candidates in the final dissertation writing stage or recent graduates (not more than 4 years since graduation) who are members of CIES and registered or planning to register for the 2014 CIES Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada.

  • Those who have not previously participated in a Publication Mentoring Workshop.

  • Those who are committed to read and engage substantively with other group members’ publication draft both prior to and during the workshop.

CIES New Scholars Fellows Publication Paper Criteria

Please comply with/include the following information in your 750 word abstract*:

    • PLEASE TYPE IN AT THE VERY TOP IN BOLD CAPITALIZED LETTERS: NEW SCHOLARS PUBLICATION MENTORING WORKSHOP

    • Name of your institution and dissertation faculty advisor if applicable. To enable a blind review process please DO NOT MENTION YOUR NAME.

    • Indication whether you are a final stage doctoral student or recent graduate at the time of the conference.

    • Objectives or purposes, main questions and significance of the article.

    • Theoretical or conceptual framework used and its connection to the literature.

    • Research design, data collection methods, and analytic techniques.

The publication draft will be circulated to all members of the New Scholars Publication Mentoring Workshop. The publication draft must be no more than 9000 words excluding references.

  • Please keep in mind that prior to the New Scholars Publication Mentoring Workshop in Toronto, you will be required to read all the papers in your assigned group (not more than four) and to prepare comments on the questions your group members pose about their draft.
